Exercise is key to burning fat and building muscle for long term results. It's also important to eat the right proportion of low glycemic carbohydrates, proteins and fats. The current recommendation is 30% lean proteins, 40% low glycemic carbohydrates, and 30% acceptable fats.

Popular diets these days may help you lose weight in the short term. But in my opinion, these diets are not only unhealthy, but will not lead to long term weight loss. These types of diets fail every time, because they are too restrictive and are based on a short-term mindset. While you may lose weight in the beginning, the weight loss is water weight and loss of muscle tissue.

Burn Fat The Smart Way!

I'm going to start with a list of fat burning foods that should be part of your daily routine. I use these daily to keep my body a fat burning machine.

• Apple cider vinegar

• Cranberries

• Flax seed oil and/or flax seed

• Lemons

Apple cider vinegar is the first of foods that burn fat and has been used for thousands of years as a cleansing and healing elixir. It is an excellent fat burner and helps speed up metabolism. It is also a naturally occurring antibiotic and antiseptic that fights germs, bacteria, and viruses.

Research shows that consuming Apple cider vinegar with meals can lower blood sugar. As a result, carbohydrates are digested more slowly, which will help your body's ability to manage insulin. Insulin causes excess carbohydrates to be stored as glycogen. All of the excess carbohydrates that cannot be stored as glycogen are converted into fat.

The best way for your body to burn fat is to keep your insulin in check. This is done by controlling what you eat, your fat to muscle ratio, the efficiency of your metabolism, and your level of activity.

Recommended usage: Up to 2 teaspoons per day mixed with water. Another option is to mix with flax oil to create a salad dressing. You can also add it to your favorite recipes.

Cranberries are second on the list of fat burning foods. Cranberries acidify the urine and prevent bacteria from adhering to bladder cells. It acts as a digestive aid for removing fat in your lymphatic system. I feel cranberries are on of the best fat burning foods.

It is good to the kidneys, bladder, and skin. It's helpful for infections of the urinary tract and has anticancer properties. Cranberries are a good source of vitamin C and helps prevent a vitamin B12 deficiency by increasing the body's absorption of this nutrient.

Recommended usage: Cranberry juice cocktail products that contain sugar should be avoided. 1 cup of 100% pure unsweetened cranberry juice per day is recommended.

Flax seed oil makes the list of foods that burn fat. Flax seed oil contains omega-3's (essential fatty acids). Flax seed oil supply omega 3 fatty acid, in the form of alpha-linolenic acid, which converts to omega-3's.

Research suggests that omega-3's may help thin blood and prevent blood platelets from clotting sticking to artery walls. That, in turn, may help lower the risk for block blood vessels and heart attacks and strokes. A deficiency in omega-3's can promote the body to gain weight in different ways.

By consuming flax seed with your meal you’ll feel fuller three to four hours after eating. Omega-3's are also known to boost seratonin levels in your brain helping to release anxiety and stress, which lead to overeating. Flax seed oil also increases your metabolism and helps to dislodge toxins from your fatty tissues helping your body to eliminate them.

Recommended usage: Two tablespoons of flax seed oil per day. Flax seed oil is highly perishable. It should be purchased refrigerated and kept refrigerated. You can also add ground flax seed to smoothies or sprinkled on a salad.

Lemon makes the list of fat burning foods. Lemons supply four times more vitamin C than oranges. Lemons are known to help reduce cholesterol, detoxify your system and acts as a diuretic ridding the body of retained water and toxins.

Lemons also help liquefy fat so that your system can eliminate fat for quicker weight loss. Lemons have also been shown to reduce cellulite by stimulating blood flow to the skin and cleansing the lymphatic system.

Recommended usage: The juice of one lemon, every day.

I have to include water on this list of fat burning foods, even though water technically isn't a food. Water is essential for eliminating toxins and for every bodily process we go through. It is absolutely essential for fat burning.

You must get into the habit of drinking at least half of your weight in ounces of water. For example: if you weigh 200 pounds, you should drink 100 ounces of water daily. This is just a rule of thumb and will be dependent upon your level of activity. Tip - add lemon juice to your water to add flavor.

Without water, your kidneys need help from your liver to perform their functions. This keeps the liver from being able to perform its normal fat burning capabilities causing the fats to get deposited in your tissues.
